According to reports around 16% of homeowners cause damage their property when undertaking repair work. A leading insurance firm states that the average claim for accidental damage done during DIY is around £600 per claim.
Some homeowners carry out work without checking to see if their insurance covers any damage. Most insurance firms offer accidental damage which covers mishaps such as spilling paint on carpets and damaging pipe work. Check with you insurer before carrying out any work to make sure you are covered.
It is also estimated that around 200k people are injured and end up in hospital because of their DIY efforts. This is mostly down to using the wrong equipment or taking on tasks that should be left to expert tradesmen. If you do not own the correct tools for the job why not hire them from a local tool hire firm instead.
