In the UK we produce over 33.5 tonnes of waste each year of which less than 25% is recycled. By recycling more of our waste we could save energy and also help the environment. It is thought that 60% of what we throw away could be recycled and around 50% could be composted. The lost energy from 1 household dustbin could produce enough power to run a television for 5000 hours.
Most homes in Merseyside are provided with recycling bins from the council for paper and garden waste. Also available are bottle banks for glass, plastic and tins which can be found in some large supermarket car parks.
